  • Is this qualification suitable for me?

    The CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities is a flexible qualification designed to confirm occupational competence for specific job roles in the industry or within a particular organisation – these job roles include:


    • Transfer station operative 
    • Recycling operative
    • Recyclables collection drivers 
    • Recycling collection loaders 

    People already working in relevant roles could be employed by local authorities, waste management companies or third-sector (not-for-profit) organisations. 




    This qualification is open entry. This means that learners interested in undertaking the CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities do not require any other qualifications or levels of attainment to take this qualification. However, learners will need to be employed in a suitable position, or have access to the working environment, as the qualification is assessed ‘on the job’

  • Qualification Process

    This CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities is assessed in the work environment, the process requires the Learner to demonstrate he or she has the required knowledge and skills to work at permitted waste management facility.


    The qualification process would include a number of visits by one of our competent Assessors. 


    The first assessment visit will include an induction, to explain the process, as well as the Centre and awarding organisation’s policies, practices and procedures. 


    Each Learner will need to complete the 5 mandatory units and they will also need to select one of the below pathways, which includes an additional 4 units, also selecting 1 unit from the relevant operational pathway group, resulting in a total of 10 units required to achieve this qualification. 


    Pathway Unit's Available:


    • Collection Pathway (GROC1) 
    • Reception and Processing Pathway (GRORP1)
    • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Pathway (GROWE1)

    Mandatory Units Group A:


    • Working safely in the recycling industry (RA1.1)
    • Maintain effective working relationships in the recycling industry (RA1.2)
    • Maintain standards of service during recycling activities (RA1.3)
    • Environmental protection within the recycling industry (RA1.4)
    • Manual handling, lifting and moving of loads in a waste environment (WO38)

    Collection Pathway (GROC1) 


    Learners who choose the Collection pathway must complete all Collection Mandatory Units, and then choose 1 unit from the Collection Optional Unit group: 


    • Collect recyclables and other materials (RA1.5)
    • Assist in the safe operation of work vehicles during recycling operations (RA1.8)
    • Loading a waste transport vehicle (WO5) 
    • Communicate with the public and others on recycling activities (RA2.6) 

    Collection Pathway Optional Units 


    Learners must choose one unit from this group:


    • Dispatch recyclables and other materials (RA1.7) 
    • Comply with procedure to maintain security of facilities, equipment and materials within the recycling industry (RA1.10) 
    • Sort and prepare recyclables and other materials for processing (RA1.11) 
    • Encourage recycling services through promotion (RA2.7) 
    • Select and use containers for recyclables and other materials (RA2.12)

    Reception and Processing Pathway (GRORP1) 


    Learners who choose the Reception and Processing pathway must complete all units in the Reception and Processing Mandatory Units group, and then choose 1 unit from the Reception and Processing Optional Unit Group: 


    • Operate equipment for processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.6)
    • Clean and maintain facilities and equipment for the processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.9) 
    • Sort and prepare recyclables and other materials for Processing (RA1.11) 
    • Prepare plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.13) 

    Reception and Processing Pathway Optional Units


    • Dispatch recyclables and other materials (RA1.7)
    • Assist in the safe operation of work vehicles during recycling operations (RA1.8) 
    • Comply with procedure to maintain security of facilities, equipment and materials within the recycling industry (RA1.10) 
    • Assist in the maintenance of plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.12) 
    • Operate and shut down processing plant (RA1.14) 
    • Communicate with the public and others on recycling activities (RA2.6) 
    • Encourage recycling services through promotion (RA2.7) 

    Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Pathway (GROWE1)


    These are also the units for the GROWEC1 option used by Computers for Charities, where the CoC certificate will include ‘Computer Refurbishment’ in the title.


    Learners who select the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment pathway must choose 5 units from this group:


    • Collect recyclables and other materials (RA1.5) 
    • Operate equipment for processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.6)
    • Dispatch recyclables and other materials (RA1.7)
    • Assist in the safe operation of work vehicles during recycling operations (RA1.8) 
    • Clean and maintain facilities and equipment for the processing of recyclables and other materials (RA1.9)
    • Comply with procedure to maintain security of facilities, equipment and materials within the recycling industry (RA1.10)
    • Sort and prepare recyclables and other materials for processing (RA1.11)
    • Assist in the maintenance of plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.12) 
    • Prepare plant and equipment for processing recyclables and other materials (RA1.13)
    • Operate and shut down processing plant (RA1.14)
    • Communicate with the public and others on recycling activities (RA2.6)
    • Encourage recycling services through promotion (RA2.7)

    As part of the process, you will be required to answer a minimum 10 question papers (One for each unit), you will also need to demonstrate the requirements for onward reporting of issues identified be it issues with machinery or equipment, unsafe situations etc as well as understanding of PPE, how to respond to environmental incidents to name but a few. 


    Don’t worry, you will plan each assessment visit with your Assessor to allow time to complete the work required! 


    When your Assessor arrives on site, he or she will be looking to observe you carrying out your daily duties, asking questions about the tasks you carry out, looking at any relevant documentation and getting you to explain the various processes and procedures. 


    On completion, the Centre will claim your certificate, which will be scanned, and a copy sent in advance of the original certificate. 

  • Qualification Cost's

    CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Diploma in Recycling Activities (GROC1, GRORP1, GROWE1, GROWEC1)


    £1699.00 + VAT Per Learner


    Includes:

    • Registration for the appropriate ‘CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 1 Qualification’. 
    • 3 Assessment visits, Including over 15 hours of assessment.
    • All assessor time, travel and associated expenses.
    • E-Portfolio to allow you to complete your knowledge questions, upload evidence, track progress, as well as providing access to hundreds of pieces of guidance and knowledge videos.

    Additional Charges:


    £600 + VAT - Per additional assessment visit, this is typically required where the assessor has confirmed an assessment within 7 days, and then turns up on site and the learner has either done nothing or the assessment can’t go ahead as the learner has meetings or other work which takes priority over the assessment. 


    However, to date we have never charged a client for an extra assessment visit which is down to the rigorous planning and support we provide our learners.

    Your portfolio will be located online, which you can access through any website browser via a laptop, computer or mobile device.


    Here you can access your knowledge question papers, completing them online and submitting them for marking, with one simple click of a button, which will also notify your Assessor automatically!  We also provide access to a huge archive of guidance documents on a range of health, safety, waste and environmental subjects.


    This will not only help you research and learn in order to achieve the award, but it’s also the ideal on-site reference tool, when carrying out your daily duties.

  • Do I need access to an operational facility?

    Yes, you need access to an operational facility with the required resource, as the assessment phase is completed in the working environment. 


    Operational facility examples: metal recycling sites, transfer stations, landfills, or sites involved in deposit for recovery. 


    Resource examples: people/staff, vehicles, mobile plant, procedures, assessments, products, or materials.

  • How long does it take to complete?

    These qualifications are led by the Learner, with support from their Assessor. 


    It’s hard to give an accurate time frame, as it will depend on a range of factors, such as completing work set by their Assessor, existing knowledge and experience, and workload to name but a few. 


    We would however expect a learner to complete this qualification in around 3 to 6 months. 


  • Do I need any other qualifications?

    No, this qualification is open entry which means you don't need to have achieved any other qualification.
